Unafraid Life Lessons – February 2016

I sat down a few days ago and realized that I’ve learned a lot over the last 30ish days. Its easy to just keep moving forward without thinking twice about the past month, but I think its important to take a moment and reflect. So let’s look back, shall we?

1. Lean into the uncomfortable.

February  (and well, January too) brought a lot of changes for me. Besides starting my last semester of grad school I’ve been invited to step forward into some leadership roles in some different areas. I’m excited and nervous and every emotion in between, but there are a lot of growing pains that come with that. Learning how to do new things means that you won’t always feel good and you won’t always get everything right. But no matter how many times you fall down, be sure to dust yourself off and get back up. You’ll get the hang o it eventually.

2. You’re dreams won’t wait for you to chase them.

It can be so easy to come up with a thousand reasons why we can’t do something and imagine a million things that will stand in the way. Trust me, I get that nothing in life comes free or easy, but more often than not we are the biggest thing standing in the way of accomplishing our dreams. This past month I decided to put my fear aside and take a few leaps of faith. I finally launched my own photography business (you can check out Mahogany Truth by clicking here!) and got serious about my marathon training (updates coming soon!) And yeah its completely possible that with these or any other dream I could fail miserably and fall flat on my face, but at least I’ll be able to say that I tried. And getting started is half the battle right?

3. Don’t forget to breathe.

I’ll be the first to admit that when I get busy or stressed my self-care goes out the window. (Midterms have been been kicking my butt this week and I can’t remember what I had for lunch… Did I have lunch?…) But that is literally the opposite of what we should do when we have a lot on our plates. You can’t take care of others if you’re not well yourself. You can’t write that paper without food in your stomach.  And I don’t know how anyone get things done without a good night’s sleep. No matter how busy we get we have to make our sanity a priority. Go dancing with friends, let yourself watch Netflix guilt-free, journal, hit the gym or cuddle up with a book. Do what ever you need to press your reset button and give your mind  a break. Take a deep breath, then dive back in and keep moving forward.
