Portraits of the Unafraid: Jackie

How do you define yourself? How would you describe yourself?
I’m family-oriented. I love my family. Friends-oriented after that. I love my friends, who are my family, so family-oriented.

What is one dream you have that scares you and why?
I’m scared of not finding stability. My whole life I grew up in a single-parent home with my dad and it was really hard. I’ve never lived in one place for a long time. I’ve never had my own bed. I’ve never had my own place to stay. I’m scared of falling back into the pattern of people back home, in the sense of having a boring, basic job doing menial labor that doesn’t engage me. That really scares me. I don’t want to do that. I’ve worked very hard and I just want a good job. I want to be able to give back to my family and maybe provide them with that stability that we’ve never been able to have.
What do you think of when your hear the word “unafraid”?
I think of power. And I think of smiles. I think of people who are not afraid to laugh no matter what anyone else thinks. People who are able to and want to see things that others can’t, whether or not they understand them. But more than anything when I think of “unafraid” I think of someone smiling really big, like nothing matters. Like you really couldn’t care less.

Jackie is a senior at Williams College. She loves music, dance, and laughter. She dreams of living life Unafraid.
